GAP REPORTS STRONG FINANCIAL RESULTS FOR 2017/18

GAP Hire Solutions, the plant, tool and equipment rental company, has enjoyed another extremely successful year. GAP recorded an annual turnover of £186.6m, which is an increase from last year's £175m. The rise in turnover has been achieved despite the year to 31st March 2018 having three fewer trading days than the prior financial period.

GAP Giving is the GAP Group's Charitable Foundation which was set up in April 2015 with the primary aim of donating around 0.5% of the company's profits to charities nominated by staff.

Cumbria Police Launch Traceable Scheme To Tackle Livestock Theft

Cumbria Police and farmers are taking a joint approach in a bid to tackle sheep theft. Officers will work with farmers to launch a forensic marking scheme that will see a traceable solution - supplied by SelectaDNA - applied to livestock. It is hoped to be a preventative tool, as well as meaning that in the event of animals being stolen, they can easily be traced back to the farm.

GAP's Vertical Digging System Provides Improved Safety and Productivity

GAP Hire Solutions has bought its first vertical VDS (Vertical Digging System) excavator from Wacker Neuson. The decision to add the three-tonne EZ28 model to their fleet was driven by excellent feedback after the German manufacturer supplied the machine for evaluation by GAP and engineers at The Highland Council.

CPA CONFERENCE REVIEW

This story starts with a CanTrack client, a leading plant-hirer, reporting a stolen Thwaites 1 tonne site-dumper. The machine, fitted with a CanTrack Asset, was stolen in Hammersmith, West London.

PANIU, the Met Police’s specialist plant theft unit, has recently reported a 7.8% increase in thefts, year on year, and an upward trend in the theft of ‘compact-equipment’ which will fit in the back of a panel van. This latest theft fitted these trends, most likely carried out by ‘professional’ thieves.

PLANT EQUIPMENT SUCCESSFULLY PROTECTED FROM THEFT

A LEADING energy installation company has successfully protected its plant equipment from theft at construction sites across the UK by using the latest covert forensic marking technology.

Mark Group, which installs energy solutions for house builders, businesses and local authorities, deployed SelectaDNA Trace in June 2013 to mark scaffolding tubes that could be targeted by thieves. Since then there have been no thefts of Mark Group's own property.

The BTEC Level 3 award, launched in October 2012, covers the identification of stolen plant and machinery. This extremely popular course was held for the fifth time in June 2013 with delegates from The Metropolitan Police, Hampshire and Cheshire constabularies and the two day course equips police officers with the knowledge to tackle opportunistic and professional equipment theft.

The 100,000th machine to be fitted with CESAR security and registration rolled off the JCB Loadall production line at Rocester, Staffordshire yesterday. The JCB 541-70 Loadall was fitted with an appropriate CESAR triangular tamper evident registration plate with the distinctive alpha-numeric registration mark 10OO0O (one, zero, o, o, zero, o).

JCB was one of the early adopters of the scheme, fitting CESAR to its UK construction machines from October 2007 and to agricultural machines from January 2010. JCB built machines are a common target for professional and opportunistic criminals that prey on unwary owners and operators. Notably with the fitment of CESAR, and other anti-theft measures, the theft rate of JCB machines, has dropped markedly. In the second quarter of 2012 just 89 JCB machines were reported as being stolen compared to 188 machines in the same period of 2009, a reduction of 52%.

PLANTWORX Countdown event a huge success - over 150 delegates attend and Lord Henley, Minister for Crime Prevention made guest appearance to talk security and Plant Theft.

PLANTWORX, the new biennial construction exhibition (14th - 16th May 2013, Stoneleigh, Warwickshire) hosted a Countdown event last week, alongside the CITS (Combined Industries Theft Solutions) sixth conference, which discussed the issues surrounding the growing problem of equipment, scrap metal and fuel theft.

The Countdown event was well attended with more than 150 industry professionals, who took time out of their very busy schedules to make the pilgrimage to Stoneleigh Park - the home of PLANTWORX.

It's a fact that in the current economic climate, theft is on the increase and the police are unable to cope. Cars, vans, trucks, and motorbikes have always been a target for professional and opportunistic thieves and in the past decade construction and agricultural equipment has been a common target with over 500 machines stolen every month from farms and construction sites up and down the UK. More recently, thieves have turned their attention to fuel oil, diesel, petrol and metal of all types. The total cost of theft is an imponderable but insurance industry estimates put the total cost of theft in the UK at up to £3 billion every year.

Volvo Construction Equipment announced, at the opening of the Executive Hire Show, that 4 of its range of mini- excavators will be protected with CESAR security and registration. Construction machines are now 4 times more likely to be stolen than a car in the UK and mini-excavators are the most commonly stolen type, with over 800 stolen in the past 2 years, and so the move is a logical one!

Valtra, part of the AGCO group, is the leading tractor manufacturer in the Nordic countries. Valtra can trace its roots back to 1832. The adoption of CESAR as the official European wide equipment security and registration scheme took a step forward this week after a Europol conference at New Scotland yard. The conference, organised by the Plant and Agricultural National Intelligence Unit (PANIU), was attended by 25 delegates from across Europe including Italy, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Sweden, and Serbia.

Thames Valley Police has launched a new plant and rural crime reduction initiative involving CESAR, the official equipment security and registration scheme. The initiative is aimed at reducing the theft of expensive agricultural and construction equipment in the area. In the 6 months from December 2009 there have been 115 incidents of tractor and plant theft in the Thames Valley area.

Lincolnshire is one of the 'hot-spots' for tractor thefts currently, with over 30 high value tractors stolen this year, which is why the police are promoting the CESAR scheme to farmers, farm contractors, and agricultural equipment dealers around the large county.

Please be aware that the Plant & Agricultural National Intelligence Unit (PANIU) has seen a gradual rise in the number of fraudulent adverts in publications such as Autotrader and Resale Weekly. These adverts have been for various machines and high powered sports cars which have never actually existed.

A seminar was held recently at New Scotland Yard to introduce the dedicated Plant & Agricultrual National Intelligence Unit to utilities companies and contractors. The event was very successful and sponsored jointly by CITS and the Metropolitan Police.

Due to the success of Crassus I earlier in the year the police decided to stage Crassus II. Once again this was very successful, equipment to the value of £1.5 million being recovered. This showed a recovery rate of 16% during the operation.

The date the dedicated Plant & Agricultural National Intelligence Unit officially came into operation. One of the Unit's findings has been that bogus lorries have been appearing on sites.
